As everyone starts rolling back into the office after the summer break, the news has started to roll once again! And we have some great stories for you as September begins…

First up this week… Air, electricity, and a single microbe: has a new protein era dawned? A Finnish biotech company has achieved a major breakthrough with its sustainable protein, Solein, which has been approved by FDA for commercial use in the USA.

Meanwhile, a startup specializing in fermented fungi-based ingredients has partnered with a major European meat producer to launch a new line of clean-label meat alternatives. The products, made with a single, innovative ingredient, are set to hit the market in Germany and could revolutionize the meat analog industry.

A Canadian startup specializing in plant-based seafood has secured US$6 million in funding to expand its operations. A major global retailer from Sweden is among the investors, aligning with its goal of offering more sustainable food options.

And who wasn’t thrilled to read about the new £38 million research center being established in the UK to develop sustainable and delicious alternatives to animal proteins. The center will focus on alternative proteins derived from sources such as plants, fungi, algae, insects, and cultured meat. It will work with industry, regulators, and policymakers to develop a National Protein Strategy for the UK.

On the other side of the world, Australia has the potential to become a global leader in precision fermentation, according to a new report that highlights the nation's strengths in scientific research, manufacturing, and regulation. Key challenges include funding for research, regulatory hurdles, and infrastructure. By addressing these challenges, Australia can capitalize on its opportunities in this emerging field.
