We have a bit of everything for you this week, from huge investment announcements and big appointments to commercial deals and technological breakthroughs!

Up first, we were especially pleased to see the EU Parliament voting in favor of the NGT (new genomic techniques) legislation. The legislation is part of a package of measures designed to ensure the sustainable use of natural resources and to strengthen the resilience of EU food systems.

At the same time, researchers in Leiden studying bioenergy with carbon capture and storage have reported that replacing 50% of animal products with alternative proteins by 2050 could free up enough agricultural land to generate renewable energy equivalent in volume to today's coal-generated power while simultaneously removing substantial CO2 from the atmosphere. The benefits of a transition, even in part, to alternative proteins keep stacking up…!

Meanwhile, a Spanish giant in plant-based meats has announced a huge Series B, securing €40 million funding that will drive the company to profitability. Hoping to follow suit is an Israeli company that has confirmed its inaugural commercial MOU in the private sector for its 3D printing solution, marking what it claims is an industry-first incorporation of industrial-scale 3D printing technology into the food industry!

Across the Atlantic in Canada, a brand-new consortium has unveiled plans to bring unique and exciting plant-based options to the market, including nori and tamagoyaki plant-based egg products.
