Sports nutrition is an interesting test for alternative proteins. This week, a €1.2 million investment is backing a cow-free approach to the category, where performance and functionality matter just as much as finding an animal-free ingredient.

There’s movement on the supply side too. Thousands of votes are in for PPTI’s 27 Food-Techs to Watch, a new Australian biopilot is opening up more room for precision fermentation, and a yeast protein platform has picked up two new certifications. Different developments, but each brings another piece of the puzzle into focus.

Then there’s the consumer side. New research looks at whether pets will accept microbial protein in their food, while another study digs into what makes people come back to alternative proteins. Because getting someone to try something is one thing; getting them to buy it again is another.
